Dodo Museum Admission Ticket, Pamplemousses
A 45–75 minute guided visit to the small museum opposite the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden: ten reconstructed extinct birds, a dodo skeleton, augmented reality and a film.
The dodo lived only in Mauritius, and this small museum is given over entirely to it. It sits across the road from the main gate of the SSR Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, so the two make a natural half-day together.
Your ticket includes the curated guided visit, which runs 45 minutes to 1 hour 15. The guide takes you through what the bird really looked like (not the fat grey caricature; the museum calls that the 200-year mistake), how it sounded, how it fed and nested, the differences between male and female, the 1625 painting of a living dodo, and why it was gone within a century of the first Dutch landings. Then the wider story: the other birds Mauritius lost, with ten reconstructions in the galleries including a life-size red rail, a dodo skeleton, a nest, augmented-reality scenes on a tablet, a short film, a 1500s Arab dhow from the era of the island’s first visitors, and four of the island’s endemic plants. The visit ends in the shop.
Open Monday to Saturday 09:00–17:00 and Sunday 09:00–14:00. Arrive at least 75 minutes before closing so the full visit fits, and show your booking confirmation at the desk.
Getting there: 15–20 minutes from Grand Baie, 20–25 from Port Louis, 35–45 from Belle Mare, 40–45 from Flic en Flac. The museum has its own car park; when it is full, use the Botanical Garden car park and walk over, one to three minutes. L’Aventure du Sucre at Beau Plan is five minutes away by car if you want to make a full day of the north.
