Your First 3 Days in Mauritius: A Simple Plan
Rest, sea, island: a simple first-three-days plan from locals who plan Mauritius holidays every day.
The first days of a holiday set the tone. Too much and you are tired. Too little and you waste good weather. Here is a simple three-day plan we give our guests. It assumes you are staying in the north or north-west.
Before you land
A few things make day one easier:
- Book your airport transfer. The airport is in the south-east. The north is a long drive. A private airport transfer means no queues and no stress after a long flight.
- Get some rupees. Small shops and snack stalls often take cash only.
- Pack sunscreen and a hat. The sun is strong, even on cloudy days.
Day 1: Arrive, rest, sunset
Do not plan a big trip on day one. Flights to Mauritius are long, and many land in the morning.
Morning and afternoon
Check in, eat, and sleep if you need to. Then go for a short swim. The lagoon is a good, gentle start.
Evening
Walk to the beach for sunset. The west and north-west coasts face the sunset, so Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy and Flic en Flac are good spots.
Have an early dinner and an early night. Tomorrow starts early.
Day 2: A morning at sea
Morning is the best time for the sea. The lagoon is often calmer and the light is better.
The turtle snorkel
Our Turtle Habitat Snorkelling Experience is a one-hour guided snorkel from Trou aux Biches beach. You get gear, a life jacket and a guide. It costs from €38 per person.
It is a good first sea trip. It is short, so it does not drain you while you are still adjusting. Our crews say green turtles are often seen, not guaranteed. They are wild and decide when to appear.
Not a swimmer? Take the glass-bottom boat instead. You see the reef from a dry seat.
The rest of the day
Have lunch by the beach. Rest in the shade in the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, take a walk around Grand Baie or along the Coastal Road.
Why do the sea on day 2?
Sea trips depend on the weather. If you book them early in your trip and the weather changes, there is time to move them. Leave boat trips to your last day and you may miss them.
Day 3: See the island
By day three you are rested. Now see more than the beach.
A private north island tour
The Full-Day North Island Tour is private, with a driver, fuel and hotel pick-up and drop-off. It costs from €96 per vehicle for up to 4 people.
It covers:
- The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Pamplemousses, with old trees and giant water lilies.
- Château Labourdonnais, a restored colonial house, with local fruit liqueur tasting.
- Maheswarnath Mandir in Triolet, one of the oldest Hindu temples in Mauritius.
- Grand Baie village, for cafés and shops.
- The Red Church at Cap Malheureux, a classic photo stop by the sea.
Entry fees are not included, so bring some cash.
Prefer the south?
If you want crater lakes, waterfalls and forest, choose the private south tour instead. It covers Trou aux Cerfs, Grand Bassin, Bassin Blanc and Rochester Falls.
After day 3: plan the rest
With the first three days done, you know the island better. Now you can plan bigger days:
- A full-day catamaran to the northern islands or Île aux Cerfs.
- A private sunset cruise for a special evening.
- A private island day on Île des Deux Cocos in the Blue Bay Marine Park.
Many guests like to book these together. Message us with your dates and we will suggest a plan. Find more options in our private island tours.
If you are staying elsewhere
This plan assumes the north. If you stay on the east or south-east coast, swap things around. Do your first sea morning in the south-east lagoon and save the north tour for later. The idea stays the same: rest on day one, sea on day two, island on day three.
Simple tips for the first days
- Drink a lot of water. Heat and jet lag are a tiring mix.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen. It protects you and the coral.
- Do not touch marine life. No turtles, no coral, no starfish.
- Keep one free day. Weather can change plans. A buffer day helps.
