Rainy Day in Mauritius: What Still Works

Eternis Group of companies • October 20, 2026

Where to go when it rains, why a private tour helps, and what happens to boat trips.

It rains in Mauritius. In summer, it can rain hard. But a rainy morning does not have to ruin your day. Here is what locals do.

First: check where it is raining

Mauritius is small, but the weather is very local. It can pour in Curepipe while Grand Baie is sunny. It can rain on the east coast while the west is dry.

The centre of the island is higher and gets the most rain. The north and west coasts are often drier. In summer, showers are often short. An hour later the sun is out.

So before you cancel your plans, look at the radar and look at the sky. Often the answer is to drive somewhere else.

Why a private tour works well on a rainy day

On a wet day, renting a car and driving yourself is not much fun. Roads are busy, and you lose time deciding where to go.

A private island tour solves this. You have a driver, a car and hotel pick-up. If it rains in one place, the driver can change the order of stops or head to a drier part of the island. You stay flexible.

Option 1: Port Louis, markets and history

Port Louis has a lot to see under a roof or a short walk away.

Our Full-Day North & Port Louis Tour includes:

  • The Caudan Waterfront, with shops, cafés and harbour views.
  • The Central Market, a covered maze of fruit, spices and crafts.
  • Aapravasi Ghat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about the indentured labourers who came to Mauritius.
  • Fort Adelaide (La Citadelle), with views over the city.
  • Champ de Mars, the island's oldest horse racing track.

It is private, with hotel pick-up and drop-off. It costs from €96 per vehicle for up to 4 people. Entry fees are not included.

Option 2: The south, when the clouds lift

The south has dramatic views: crater lakes, forest and waterfalls. Waterfalls are often at their best after rain.

The Full-Day South Island Tour covers Trou aux Cerfs crater, Mare aux Vacoas, the Sophie Nature Walk, Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao), Bassin Blanc and Rochester Falls. It is a private car or van with a driver, fuel and hotel pick-up. It costs from €96 per vehicle for up to 4 people.

A tip: the high plateau around Curepipe and Grand Bassin is often the wettest part of the island. Bring a light rain jacket and good shoes. Your driver can adjust the order if one area is very wet.

Option 3: Temples, gardens and markets in the north

The north has gentle stops that work in light rain too. The Pamplemousses botanical garden, Château Labourdonnais, the Maheswarnath Mandir in Triolet and the Red Church at Cap Malheureux are all on our private north island tour. A light shower in a tropical garden can be beautiful.

Option 4: Food

Rain is a great excuse to eat. Try a plate of dholl puri, a bowl of mine frit (fried noodles) or a hot curry in a local restaurant. Grand Baie and Port Louis have plenty of choice.

What about boat trips?

Light rain on its own does not always stop a boat. Wind and waves are what matter. Strong wind makes the sea rough. Heavy rain can make the water cloudy for snorkelling.

If your catamaran or glass-bottom trip is affected, we contact you on WhatsApp to move you to the next good day.

This is why we suggest booking your sea trips early in your stay. That way, there is time to move them if the weather turns.

A simple rainy-day plan

  • Morning: check the radar. If it is wet in the centre, head to Port Louis or the coast.
  • Midday: a long local lunch.
  • Afternoon: if the sky clears, visit a viewpoint or waterfall.
  • Evening: if the sun comes out, catch the sunset on the west coast.

Combine days and save the stress

Many guests book two or three days together: a boat day, an island tour and a free day for weather. Tell us your dates and we will build a plan that can move with the weather.

FAQ

What can I do in Mauritius when it rains? Visit Port Louis (markets, Aapravasi Ghat, the waterfront), take a private island tour, try local food, or drive to a drier coast.

Which part of Mauritius has the least rain? The north and west coasts are usually drier than the centre and the east. But weather changes quickly, so check on the day.

Do island tours still run in the rain? Yes. Island tours are by private car or van, so they run in normal rain. The driver can change the order of stops.

Will my boat trip be cancelled if it rains? Not always. Wind and sea conditions matter more than rain. If it is not safe, we move your trip and tell you on WhatsApp.

Rain on your holiday? We will re-plan it with you.
